This brief required me to redesign the cover of the book 'Girl, Woman, Other'.

The book 'Girl, Woman, Other,' is a novel by Bernadine Evaristo
about the lives of twelve black women. The book is written in a way that the lives of all twelve women overlap each other.

My first idea was inspired by the collage artist Hannah Höch. I also looked at African wax fabric and incorporated them into the collage

Still on the idea of African wax prints, I created a wax print of the UK flag in Pan-African Colours. I added this as a way of representing the theme of race in the book. I didn't end up using this idea because I felt that it was a bit too political.

Using fabric once again, I used the Pan-African Colours as a way of exploring the theme of intersectionality. I allowed the colours to flow into each other and then used the fabric as the background of my book cover.

My previous idea didn't represent women well enough so I decided to make another cover. This eyes in this idea represent each woman. This idea didn't work too well as the type doesn't work too well with the imagery.

I tried changing the colours around and a new layout, however, some of the text still wasn't legible.

For this next idea, I wanted to create something that represents black women. I illustrated silhouettes of women's faces and had them overlap each other. The three faces represent the three words of the title.

I decided to add more faces so the 12 faces represent the 12 women. The faces form the cover the spine and the back page.
